How to Match a Servo Motor and Drive

5 min read

A servo system is a matched set: a servo motor, a servo drive (amplifier) that powers it, and a feedback device that closes the loop. Because they're tuned to work together, you usually replace them as a compatible pair within one manufacturer's family.

Servo motor specs

  • Continuous and peak torque (Nm), and rated speed (RPM).
  • Rated voltage and current.
  • Feedback type: resolver, incremental encoder, or absolute encoder (single/multi-turn) — the drive must support it.
  • Frame/flange size, shaft (keyed/smooth), holding brake (yes/no), and connector style.

Servo drive specs

  • Output current/power must match the motor.
  • Input voltage and phase (e.g. 230V single/three-phase, 480V three-phase).
  • Control mode: torque, velocity or position.
  • Communication: EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, analog/pulse.

Keep the family together

Servo motors and drives are matched within a series — Siemens SINAMICS/SIMOTICS, Allen-Bradley Kinetix, Yaskawa Sigma, Mitsubishi MELSERVO, Bosch Rexroth IndraDrive, Beckhoff. Mixing brands rarely works; if one half failed, match its compatible counterpart.

Send us both part numbers

Tell us the motor and drive part numbers (and whether they're discontinued), and we'll source the matched components or advise the manufacturer's successor pair, then quote with availability and lead time.
