ABB and Schneider VFD Cross-Reference and Replacement Guide

6 min read

Variable-frequency drives (VFDs) have a shorter service life than the motors they run, so a drive going obsolete is one of the most common reasons a working machine suddenly needs sourcing. Here's how to find the right replacement within the ABB ACS and Schneider Altivar ranges, and what to match when you do.

Match on specs, not just the model name

A VFD replacement has to match the application, not just the old part number. Confirm these first:

  • Power rating (kW / HP) and output current (A) - size on current, not just kW.
  • Input voltage and phase (e.g. 230V 1-ph, 400/480V 3-ph).
  • Control/application class: basic, standard machinery, or high-performance/pump-fan.
  • Communications (Modbus, PROFIBUS/PROFINET, EtherNet/IP) and I/O needed.
  • Enclosure rating (IP20/UL Open vs IP55/Type 12) and mounting/footprint.

ABB ACS family - legacy to current

  • ACS550 / ACS400 / ACS600 - older general-purpose drives, now largely migrated to ACS580.
  • ACS800 - legacy high-performance, migrated to ACS880.
  • ACS350 / ACS150 - small machinery drives, migrated to ACS380 / ACS180.

Schneider Altivar family - legacy to current

  • ATV31 / ATV312 - migrated to ATV320 (machine drive).
  • ATV61 - pumps and fans, migrated to ATV630 (process drive).
  • ATV71 - high performance, migrated to ATV930.
  • ATV21 - HVAC, migrated to ATV630/ATV212 line as applicable.

These are migrations, not drop-ins

A newer drive in the same family is the right target, but it is rarely a wire-for-wire swap: frame size, terminal layout, parameter structure and sometimes the comms module differ between generations. Plan for re-parameterization and check the physical fit. Crossing between brands (ABB to Schneider or vice versa) is possible on spec but involves even more change - treat it as a full replacement.

We source obsolete drives and their replacements

Whether you need an obsolete ACS or Altivar drive to keep a line running, or the current model to replace it, send us the drive part number and your motor data and we'll respond within two business days with the right match - availability, condition and price where we have them, and a full quote once confirmed. We are an independent reseller and not affiliated with ABB or Schneider Electric; both names are used here for identification only.
