Sumtak is a Japanese encoder brand that originated with Sumtak Corporation, established in Tokyo in 1963. The company initially produced sensors and high-frequency encoders before moving into optical rotary encoders in the 1970s, building a strong position as a supplier to the NC machine tool industry. In 2000, Sumtak became a wholly owned subsidiary of the German measurement technology company HEIDENHAIN, and in 2009 it was merged into HEIDENHAIN K.K., the group's Japanese organization.
The brand is associated primarily with optical rotary encoders used for position and speed feedback on machine tools and industrial machinery. Following the merger, Sumtak encoders have continued to be designed and produced in Japan within HEIDENHAIN's operations.
Sumtak encoders are found on CNC machine tools and other industrial equipment, and they remain a common replacement item on installed machinery worldwide.
